Top 10 Reasons to Hire A Veteran

Image17

Top 10 reasons to hire a veteran

Hiring military veterans is smart for many reason, but probably the most important is that it’s good for business.

That’s the conclusion in a study conducted last year by the Washington think tank Center for a new American Security, which looked at why companies hire veterans.

Here are 10 top reasons to hire a veteran:

1.  Leadership experience. In the military, leadership is a way of life. Former military members have day-to-day experience in both passing down orders and executing them. As active duty there is a chain of command and leaders are cultivated daily.

2.  Ability to work under pressure. Nothing indicates the ability to work under pressure like the military. Providing safety and security of the US can be stressful.

Most active duty members encounter more stress in basic training than the average citizen encounters in their entire career. Being on deployment is also stressful. Former military members know how to put their job demands ahead of personal wants.  Veterans are accustomed to working in difficult environments, traveling and even relocating to a foreign country on a regular basis. Veterans are resilient and open to change.

 3.  Higher work ethic. In order to be accepted in the military you must pass rigorous mental and physical examinations. These examinations weed out the slackers from the do-ers. Once in, the day-to-day duties must be followed to the T. As such, military are trained to perform at a higher level work ethic than the general population.

 4.  Accountability. In the military, accountability can be a literal matter of life and death. In order to keep their coworkers safe, military members must be held accountable for their actions. As an employer this will translate to ownership of job functions and duties.

 5.  Integrity. The military breeds integrity. The basis of integrity is the ability to count on a person doing the right thing while no one is looking. Integrity from a military perspective is the ability to hold together and properly regulate all of the elements of a personality.

A person of integrity, for example, is capable of acting on conviction. When you hire a veteran, you can expect this trait to convert into sincerity and trustworthiness.

 6.  Results oriented background. Military personnel are trained to accomplish goals in an effective and conscientious manner. They’re trained to minimize idle time, ask for guidance when necessary, and to prioritize tasks.

In the military, results matter. When it comes to civilian life, former military expect advancement to be based on merit and accomplishments.

 7.  Ability to work with diverse personalities. Being in the military exposes you to a very diverse landscape of personalities. Part of military service requires one to interact with persons of opposing views and personality types.

 8.  Respect for rules and procedure. Anyone who has served in the military knows the importance of rule and procedure.

Veterans have experience in carrying out orders. Following rule and procedure is a matter of routine for those on duty.

 9.  Self sacrifice. Active duty personnel are taught to be loyal to the team. They’re taught to put the team before themselves.

 10. Self-discipline. In the military, self-discipline is rigid and pervasive. In boot camp, recruits are taught to put their desires, thoughts and aspirations behind their duty or job at hand. Former military men and women in general make superior employees because of the discipline that they received while in the military.

Equal Opportunity Employer

The Rose Group – Maintenance Technician and Production Technician

Maintenance Technician and Production Technician for Highland, Texas

In 1967, a young man who worked at his family’s water delivery company decided to do something revolutionary.  With five gallon water jugs weighing in at over 50 pounds, Bill Young reasoned that plastic containers would drop that weight dramatically.  He negotiated a deal to have plastic bottles manufactured for his product, and ultimately decided to fabricate those bottles in-house.  Bill Young eventually turned his innovation into Plastipak Packaging Inc.

You may not have heard of Plastipak, but you use the products they package every day.  They employ 5,000 people worldwide, and hold more than 600 patents for their products and processes.  While they are publicly traded, Plastipak still remains a family business.

Plastipak is looking for innovative leaders with creativity, vision, integrity and character.  That is where you come in.  Your military service has taught you to be innovative, solve problems and place a high value on integrity.  They might expect a bit more of you than other employers, but they will reward your efforts.  Plastipak has two entry-level career paths they would like you to consider.

Maintenance Technician:  For this role you need strong mechanical maintenance skills and basic electrical troubleshooting abilities.  Can you test for power supply problems?  Can you fix mechanical equipment?  Are you methodical about the maintenance process and can work with little or no supervision?  Then this is the career path for you.   From here you can move up to a maintenance team lead, supervisor, manager, or plant manager.

Production Technician:  Don’t let the title fool you – this is also a technical role.  As a production technician, you are responsible for on-the-fly maintenance of the bottle making equipment in your area.  Can you fix mechanical equipment?  Are you fast on your feet?  Then this role will make good use of that skill.  From this track, you can become a production supervisor, superintendent, and eventually, a plant manager.

Shift:  The shift will rotate between six months of night shifts and six months of day shifts.  They run 12 hour shifts, so you’ll work four days on, then three days off; the following week you’ll have three days of work and four days off.

Benefits:  Both roles offer a full competitive suite of benefits, including a 401k with a match, full no-cost life insurance, and full-coverage health insurance.

For a full list please follow the link:  http://www.plastipak.com/experience/careers/benefits/

Training:  You will get four weeks of intensive training for either role, and then will be assigned to a mentor once you are out on the manufacturing floor.

Location:  Highland, TX.

This city is just north of I-10, 22 miles from downtown Houston.

How to apply for the role:  Submit your resume through the Rose Group LLC.

Send it via email to Marissa.Kessler@therosegroupllc.net
Marissa is assisting the company in hiring veterans.
She will help you prepare for the interview, and if your resume needs some tweaking, she will give you a call to help you make the best first impression.

The Yellow Ribbon Program: A Hallmark of Veteran Care

We’re fortunate in America in that we live in a society which not only values our service people, but also strives to make provisions for them once they’ve finished acting duty.

Amongst all the political in-fighting, economic turmoil and almost daily controversies reported in the press, our duty of care towards veterans is something which remains constant (and rightly so).

Getting Veterans into Civilian Work

Giving back to veterans and providing employment opportunities has always been prevalent, but it’s particularly something which the public at large has become aware of over the last decade. This is, arguably, down to the events which followed the 9/11 atrocities, coupled with the rise of mainstream Internet use – as a result, there are now some great resources and initiatives online (such as Military-Civilian!) which help ex-service people back to work
