What is USAJOBS?
To successfully create an effective application on USAJOBS, it’s important to understand what USAJOBS is, and what happens to your application after you apply.

USAJOBS is a tool used by U.S Government agencies to find the best applicants for their open positions. This tool contains several screening processes that you must pass before you are referred to the hiring manager. One of those screening processes is the ridiculously long initial application process.

Most government agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, posts their open positions on USAJOBS, and the application process for all positions is pretty much the same. Expect the first time you apply for a position on USAJOBS to take about an hour. In addition to uploading your federal resume, you will also need to fill out a questionnaire, and submit any supporting
documentation for Veterans preference etc… And then you wait… and wait some more.

It can take several weeks to receive feedback about the status of your application, or you could never hear back about your application. It really depends on the amount of applications received, and the urgency to fill the position.

Tips and Tricks
Copy and paste the major duties and basic requirements description from the announcement into your resume. I only recommend this if you do actually possess all the specific skills and requirements listed in the posting
Understand the people screening your resume have little to no knowledge about the position you are applying for. They see hundreds of resumes a day, and scan resumes for key words. (Could a civilian off the street read and understand your
resume?)
Be willing to move or apply for announcements in many different areas.
The V.A and Army Corp of Engineers seem to be the agencies easiest to get an interview with For positions requiring KSA, create a document with all the questions and write in your responses out so they can be copied into the electronic form. KSA statements help the low-level HR person better connect your experience

Only about 10-15 applications are referred to the hiring manager, and only 3-5 of those are interviewed

What’s next?
So you have found an announcement you are interested in, read the ENTIRE announcement and determined that you possess the specific experience they are looking for. Great, now comes the hard part.

You need to make your application stand out (from hundreds), and you do that with an excellent resume. Federal resumes are not pretty, they must contain only SPECIFIC RELEVANT experience pertaining to the announcement you are applying for. Highlight
your education and any certifications relevant to the announcement posting.

If your resume has an objective, I recommend you include the job title from the announcement, and the major duties description from the announcement.

Five (5) additional years of relevant experience will be considered equivalent to/in place of a Bachelor’s degree.
Proficiency with tools such as Microsoft Project (or similar scheduling tool) is preferred, with advanced MS Excel (formulas, macros, charts) and MS PowerPoint capabilities a big plus;
Any experience with “wInsight” is a huge plus;
Demonstrated experience in collecting various forms of information and producing reports, summaries, and presentations to support conclusions and/or recommendations.
Ability to establish rapport, gain an understanding of a clients/end users needs, and to help influence decision makers via strong data analysis and reporting.
Experience in statistical process control techniques is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct concurrent clinical reviews with 3rd party payers as required to increase a client’s length of stay
Advocate for necessary treatment stays for our clients with insurance case manager
Gather progress information in order to conduct reviews with Primary counselors, nurse, doctors and residential staff
Team with staff to increase LOS for clients thus improving chances of ongoing sobriety
Assist clients and/or their families or referral sources in identifying, verifying, and arranging alternative funding once insurance is exhausted
Establish thorough understanding of the various funding alternatives available to clients and how these are accessed
Refer clients to appropriate agencies that could help with funding, including CSBs, church, CSA etc.
Assist clients in understanding insurance benefits or funding information from insurance companies, state funding sources, or other sources
Document all funding information obtained and provides all billing information needed to Fiscal Department
Assist primary counselors with discharge planning
Identify discharge placement that are acceptable for on-going care for insurance clients
Provide discharge options to clinical team, clients and their families to aid in discharge planning
Assist clients in maximizing their resources in order to get the optimum treatment experience
Maintain ethical standards and continued professional growth, including:
Abide by Program and Client policy and procedures.
Ensure all CARF standards are instituted and maintained.
Promote, in public and private contacts, the quality standards and ethical practices of Client staff.
